Brexit – the first six months

We are now six months since the transition period, and looking back, we are thrilled with how Continental Flow has helped to keep imports and exports running smoothly.

Years of planning and hard work went into creating Continental Flow to ensure we cut the complexity and instead, offer a simple two-step export solution. And we’re delighted to have offered a seamless process for our customers throughout the first half of the year despite the complexities at the start.

We wanted to say a personal thank you to all of our valued customers, partners, agents and colleagues for your continued support throughout what has been a challenging start to the year for the logistics industry.

UK Driver Shortage

The UK driver market is currently facing a massive shortage of drivers, with estimates of 65,000 drivers short.

There are many factors that have played a role, for instance, the pandemic, which delayed 30,000 tests for new drivers and Brexit, with around 15,000 European truck drivers leaving the UK in the last year. The introduction of the IR35 tax legislation has also forced an increase in cost.

Whatever the causes of the shortage, it is something that is certainly being felt across the country.

What is CCC doing about it?

We have introduced a ‘Warehouse to Wheels’ scheme at our Dartford facility, which is designed to help warehouse operatives become skilled drivers.

We also have our Driver Apprentice Scheme, designed to help both those already within the company and externally receive the required training to be Class 1 or 2 drivers.

And it doesn’t stop there! We are also currently lobbying with our local MP to try and add drivers to the UK Shortage Occupation List.
